Kuala Lumpur – GONG XI FA CAI!!!!

The new year of the Chinese Calendar starts with the new moon in the night from the 2nd to 3rd of February 2011. Traditionally in Malaysia the first and the second day are public holidays whereas the celebrations start already on the new years evening and go on till the 15th day of the new year. 2011 is the year of the Golden Rabbit. Many companies closes at least for one week, due to an accumulation of public holidays (1st of February is Federal Territory Day) some companies shut down their operation for almost 2 weeks.

Kuala Lumpur - The recently published figures for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Malaysia for December show an increase of 2.2% on a year to year basis. This leads to an overall inflation rate for 2010 of 1.7%. The  price controls and subsidies for foodstuffs show effect. According to researches Malaysia is one of the least affected economies in Asia.

Kuala Lumpur – According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) the number of vehicles sold in Malaysia increased by 13% to an all-time high of 605,156. This positive trend is considered to continue in 2011 supported by the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) and the Economic Transformation Programme’s (ETP) projects mentioned the MAA President Datuk Aishah Ahmad.

Kuala Lumpur – PayPal Inc, an online payments and money transfer service provider, has announced the opening of a regional customer support centre in Malaysia and plans to hire over 300 employees over the next three years. As main reasons for chosing Malasyia were mentioned the  “highly-skilled, globally competitive and multi-lingual workforce, in addition to a world-class business environment and technology infrastructure”.

Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia and Singapore are currently in negotiations to reduce the roaming charges according to Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, the Malaysian Minister for Information, Communications and Culture. The new roaming rates should lead to lower prices and higher transparency. As it is the first in the region it is expected to trigger off more agreements of this kind in the whole ASEAN region.

Kuala Lumpur -  Malaysia Airports handled 34.3 million passengers last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), an increase of about 14.8 per cent from the 29.1 million passengers recorded in 2009. As reasons for the increase were mentioned by the senior general manager operations services Datuk Azmi Murad  the improved global economical situation as well as the increased flight frequency to Middle East.

Kuala Lumpur – German Embassador  Dr. Günter Gruber and Deputy Minister of Fincance II  Senator Datuk Dr. Awang Adek Hussin signed already in February the new Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Malaysia for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income – in short Double Taxation Agreement (DTA). It will be applied from 1st of Janauary 2011 and replaces the former one from 1977.

The ministry said the conclusion of this agreement would strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries in the fields of trade, investment, social and cultural affairs.
