Washington DC – The World Bank has recently published its report "Doing Business 2012" comparing 183 countries.Ten topics are included in the aggregate ranking on the ease of doing business and other summary measures. The goal is to provide an objective basis for understanding and improving the regulatory environment for business.

Malaysia has moved up five notches to 18th place in the Report 2012, ahead of  economies such as Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Switzerland. This is also a result of the work of a Special Taskforce to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH) which has been installed in year 2007 with the goal to address bureaucracy in business-government dealings.

Davos – Malaysia has risen five spots to 21st place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index 2011 ranking.

Among Asian countries, Malaysia was ranked the fifth most competitive country behind Singapore (2), Japan (9), Hong Kong (11) and Taiwan (13).

In particular Malaysia could collect points in the categories Strength of Investor Protection, Transport Infrastructure, Goods Market Efficiency and Financial Market Development.

Cyberjaya - Malaysia aims to be Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) ready for the public sector by year-end and for the entire nation by the end of 2012, said Information, Communication and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Rais Yatim.

IPv6 is needed to support the fast pace of Internet use growth and the explosion in the use of wireless products, quality services, inbuilt security features, enhanced mobility and the need for more IP addresses to facilitate its wider use.

Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) initiated by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib is defining the framework for the development of the nation towards a high-income country till 2020. In the recently published “Roadmap for Malaysia” 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) have been identified.

The global Aviation Maintenance, Repairing and Overhaul (MRO) services industry has been identified as one of these areas. MAS Aerospace Engineering (MAE), the engineering and maintenance division of Malaysia Airlines, is well-positioned to capture this opportunity.

The programme was aimed to establish MAE as the anchor MRO services provider in Malaysia, as well as, to develop Malaysia into an Asia Pacific MRO hub. In order to achieve this goal an increasing number of aerospace engineers will be needed.

According to MATA Chief Executive Officer Sulaiman Dahlan  Malaysia needed over 16,000 aircraft engineers a year, but in the last 15 years, only 3,000 licensed engineers were churned out. MATA is the Malaysian Aviation Training Academy.

Banting – The German NAUE GmbH & Co KG just opened a new production facility in Banting (Malaysia). In the new 5000 sqm facility NAUE is going to produce geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) which is used as a liner to protect the soil in project like roads, landfill, ground water protection and terrain maintenance.

Alexander Naue – NAUE GmbH & Co KG’s Managing Director and shareholder -  mentioned that Malaysia had been chosen to set up the wholly owned factory to be operated outside Germany due to its strategic location.

London – EF Education First – a British company specialised in language training – carried out an international research study in order to measure the English language proficiency in non-native speaking countries. The results of the EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) have been published recently. Malaysia shows with its ninth rank the best result of all Asian countries.

The EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) measures the average English proficiency of an entire country and compares English skill levels between countries. It is the first index of its kind to give countries a standardized measure of English competency in adults.

Kuala Lumpur - During a 2 days visit of the EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht a time frame for the discussion between Malaysia and the EU regarding a Free Trade Agreement has been set. Following the current plan the discussions should be finalised by June 2012, propelled by the negotiations between Malaysia and US regarding a FTA.

New York – Malaysia still keeping  the third leading position, after India and China, in the list of the world’s leading offshoring destinations.  The  global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney’s recently published its latest Global Services Location Index (GSLI) which measures the attractiveness of offshore locations in 50 countries against 39 measures across three major categories: financial attractiveness, people skills and availability, and business environment.
